Sloe gin autumn cocktail

A jewel-red autumn cocktail from BBC Good Food, October 2016 — sloe gin, dry vermouth and a hit of orange bitters, stirred until frosty and poured into a chilled coupe. Book club, pamper party, fireside gin o'clock — a banger.

Sloe gin autumn cocktail

Autumnal, elegant, and a little bit witchy. The sloe gin does all the heavy lifting — deep berry, almondy, warming. I make a jug when friends are coming over.

Method

  1. 01

Chill a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 10 minutes.

  2. 02

Fill a mixing glass or jug with ice. Pour in the sloe gin, dry vermouth and orange bitters.

  3. 03

Stir gently for 20-30 seconds with a long bar spoon — you want it properly cold and just a little diluted, not shaken cloudy.

  4. 04

    Strain into the chilled coupe.

  5. 05

Twist the lemon peel over the surface to release the oils, then drop it in. Finish with a thyme sprig if using. Serve immediately.
