French 75

Gin, lemon, sugar, Champagne. The most elegant cocktail ever invented — and impossible to get wrong. From the BBC Good Food October 2016 issue that gave us the sloe gin and the meatballs.

French 75

The perfect welcome drink. Fizzy, bright, a little bit dangerous — you cannot serve one, only a jug.

Method

  1. 01

Chill a Champagne flute in the freezer for at least 10 minutes.

  2. 02

Shake the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup hard with ice for 10 seconds — you want it properly cold.

  3. 03

    Double-strain into the chilled flute.

  4. 04

Top slowly with Champagne, letting the bubbles settle so it doesn't overflow.

  5. 05

Twist the lemon peel over the surface to release the oils, then drop it in. Serve immediately, before the bubbles go.
